Shooting In Monterey
By day Doug is a software engineer and developer. The rest of the time he is a married father of two who enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and exploring the countryside with cameras in-tow. Although the majority of his work is landscape and nature photography, he enjoys cityscapes and sports photography too. With retirement only a few years away, he and his wife Miyuki are ready for extensive travels throughout North America and perhaps internationally. He shoots with Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D digital cameras and a various assortment of lenses.
This site is a selection of digital photos taken since 2003. The majority have been taken in New Mexico, where Doug & Miyuki reside, or in Colorado, their favorite state in the lower forty-eight; it's hard to compete with Alaska and Hawaii! Although Doug took up photography early in life, shooting B&W, his true passion for photography started in undergraduate school at the University of AZ in Tucson where he worked for the University Photo Service as a photographer and darkroom tech. Arizona and the Southwest are graced with majestic light, sweeping vistas, canyons, red rock, summer monsoons, spacious skies, mountains and valleys. Water is not a dominant feature but provides spectacular opportunites. The openess lends itself to the use of telephoto lenses. You may notice that many of Doug's photographs are shot from afar. Most of his work relies heavily on the natural light in mornings, evenings, after storms and in the winter when the sun is lower in the horizon. People often comment about his use of clouds in so many of his pictures.
Thank you for visiting. If you like Doug's work, it is available in Los Alamos, New Mexico at The Fuller Lodge Art Center, Village Arts and from the galleries on this site. Custom prints are available, both matted and framed.
